Hard Prairie Volume One has arrived, and we could not be more excited to share it with you!
Volume One takes readers to the burned-out canyons and ridges of the Western States course in Tim Robert’s photo essay celebrating joy and community in the aftermath of the 2022 Mosquito Fire.
From the rugged mountains of East Tennessee come two powerful stories from last year’s Barkley Fall Classic (BFC): one, a harrowing rescue story written by S. Trent Rosenbloom, a doctor, and member of the sweeper team tasked with clearing the course; the other, a wonderfully poetic account of grit and determination, shared with depth and clarity by Laura Presley.
Further north, in Kentucky, Jenny Thorsen shines a spotlight on the Mammoth Cave 50K/25K, a relatively new ultra--having hosted its inaugural event in 2021--and one of only a few races held within a national park.
We interview Joe Hardin, a woodworker and ultra runner from Indiana, whose addiction nearly took everything he had, only for him to claw his way back from the brink, healing not only himself but others along the way.
Licensed therapist and ultra runner Cory Reese explores the relationship between mental health and the often extreme demands we place upon ourselves in the name of running. He asks readers to consider simple questions and offers practical advice to those struggling with their relationship with running.
Rounding out the issue, Carla Landrum takes readers on an incredible journey from the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas to the towering peaks of the French Alps, as she beautifully documents her year spent training for and participating in UTMB-CCC.
We at Hard Prairie are incredibly proud to present these stories to you and are endlessly grateful to those who contributed. We hope you enjoy reading Volume One as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you!
Be well!
